Civilian Outreach Corrections Academy

The Hampden County Civilian Outreach Corrections Academy is the first of it’s kind in the nation!  The Academy is provided to citizens of Hampden County (or any county for that matter) and will be conducted by trained instructors and is designed for civilians to get an inside view of the world of corrections as well as practical training in CPR, drug addiction, gang awareness and security procedures, just to name a few. It’s one night a week – two to three hours per night – for six weeks. The next academy is scheduled to begin April 3, 2019, starting at 6:00pm.

The classes include: K-9 demonstrations, Cell Extraction Team demonstrations, family and friends CPR, a “Day in the Life of a Corrections Officer”, “Day in the Life of an Inmate”, tour of the jail, recognizing substance abuse misuse, addiction to opioids, and Narcan training, as well as an overview of the Hampden County Sheriff’s Department’s role in the community.

This civilian corrections academy will be a genuine opportunity for citizens to experience corrections from the inside, the real story. Most folks only see corrections activities on TV or from outside the walls of our jails. The civilian academy will be a unique opportunity to see our operation up close from the inside.

Class sizes are limited and we have attached applications below. Please fill them out and send them back to us promptly. Applicants will be chosen on a first-come, first-served basis.
